The Big Lie

We are down to the final stretch of this legislative session but our efforts are beginning to make headway in chipping away at “The Big Lie”.

In history, I think that we can all agree that Hitler was a bad guy.  Hitler did have some qualities though that many emulate today when using propaganda.  Hitler was a master of propaganda.  These same strategies are embraced by some of our prominent advocacy groups today in their propaganda techniques.  These strategies are:

  • never allow the public to cool off

  • never admit fault or wrong

  • never concede that there may be some good in your enemy

  • never leave room for alternatives

  • concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame them for everything that goes wrong

  • people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one

  • if you repeat it frequently enough, people will sooner or later believe it.

This is the strategy that DSHS, DDD , the Developmental Disability Council (DDC), The Arc Chapters and many Self-Determination advocacy groups use focusing on closing our Residential Rehabilitation Centers (RHCs) as the cure for all the other problems.

These groups are very misled and are misleading others.  These groups will not allow any discussion of reality on their blogs, Facebook Pages, discussion pages, listserves – everything is deleted or not even allowed.  They do not want anyone to hear that there are alternatives or that there are flaws in the published reports from DDD and DSHS.

These groups accuse those who ask questions of being abusive.  If questioning analysis of reported data in a published report is considered abuse, what is advocating to evict a vulnerable person from their home, place them in isolation and remove care which keeps them healthy and safe?  Is that not abuse?  That is what these groups are advocating for.

Tomorrow, a letter to Governor Gregoire will be published.  This letter will shock many with the facts of the situation, the constitutional laws, the US Supreme Court rulings and the history of lawsuits and fines against the State of Washington for attempting to close our RHCs.  These so-called advocates need to realize that in believing in their Big Lie, they are not only hurting our most vulnerable citizens who they do not care about but they are also hurting every, single person in our community.

These groups need to concentrate on what they do well – advocate for those who are higher functioning – they need to do this without abusing those who can not speak up for themselves.
