Fircrest Family and Friends

For those interested, we now have a Fircrest Family and Friends Google Group (fircrestfamily@googlegroups.com)

This is an informal group for families and friends of residents at Fircrest School. We are building a “natural supports” network in hopes of communicating with each other and sharing experiences, hopes and dreams. We work to bridge the divide and build a continuum of care service model.  Fircrest is a Residential Habilitation Center in Shoreline, WA (RHC) and is a campus community for our most vulnerable citizens.

There will be a bi-weekly newsletter published by families and friends to update us on what people are doing, inform us of changes on campus and also local community events.  We have already started some of these projects and during the summer we will be instituting a couple more programs.

Petition to Open Fircrest Activities Building, Gym and Pool

Petition Summary:

The Activities Building at Fircrest School in Shoreline was closed by

Washington State Department of Social and Health Services in 2009

due to budget cuts

Building located at 15239 15th Ave NE, Shoreline, WA  98155

There is a full size gym, auditorium, kitchen facilities and two pools

(main pool and a therapy pool heated to 95 degrees) both of which are

accessible by stairs or lift.

The building is centrally located and accessible to all.  It is an important venue for community events and activities.

Many groups have asked about this facility and the closure of the pool was detrimental to the

health of those with disabilities – ranging from arthritis, spinal cord injuries, fibromyalgia,

cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and more.

We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens and community groups

who urge our leaders to action in reopening this facility for our

community activities and the health and recreation for our citizens.  We

are interested in finding alternative funding sources to maintain the

building and also interested in pilot projects and programs with those

who work with solar or wind energy to help minimize the utility costs.
